What a PMID and a DOI each identify, how to check a citation resolves to the paper it claims, and why an identifier separates a reference from an assertion.

Why identifiers matter more than titles
A paper title can be paraphrased, mistyped or attached to the wrong study, and none of those failures are visible when you read the citation. An identifier is checkable: it either resolves to a record or it does not. Every citation published on this site carries at least one, so any claim made from a paper can be traced back to the paper itself rather than taken on trust.

What a PMID is
A PMID is the accession number PubMed assigns to a record in its own index. It is a plain integer with no internal structure — it encodes nothing about the journal, the year or the authors, and it is only meaningful inside PubMed. Appending it to pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov opens the record.

What a DOI is
A DOI is a persistent identifier for the work itself, issued by the publisher rather than by an index. It survives a journal changing its website, its name or its owner, which is the problem it was created to solve. A DOI always begins with a registrant prefix starting "10." followed by a slash and a publisher-assigned suffix.

Checking that a citation is real
Verification is mechanical. Open the identifier, then read the record and confirm it says what the citation claims — that the title matches, that the year matches, and that the study population is the one the citing text described. A citation can resolve perfectly and still have been attached to the wrong claim.
- Open the PMID or DOI directly rather than searching the title
- Confirm the title, journal and year match the citation
- Read the abstract and check it supports the specific statement made
- Check the population and model: a result in cells is not a result in people
- Treat a citation with no identifier as unverified until you find one
What an identifier does not tell you
Resolving is not endorsement. A PMID confirms PubMed indexed the record; it says nothing about study size, design, funding or whether the finding has ever been reproduced. Indexing is a cataloguing decision, not a quality judgement.

- It does not indicate the study was large, controlled or replicated
- It does not indicate the finding applies outside the population studied
- It does not make a preprint or a retracted paper reliable

Frequently Asked Questions
Does every paper have both a PMID and a DOI?
No. A PMID exists only where PubMed has indexed the record, and a DOI exists only where the publisher has registered one. Older articles and some non-indexed journals may have one, the other, or neither.
Can a DOI change?
The identifier itself is intended to be permanent. What it points at can be updated by the publisher, which is the point: the DOI keeps resolving when the underlying URL changes.
What does it mean if a citation has no identifier?
It means the citation cannot be checked mechanically. It may still be accurate, but confirming it requires finding the record yourself before relying on the claim.
